CHINA’S Zhang Jun and Gao Ling are the new world mixed doubles champions.
They took Kim Dong Moon and Ra Kyung Min’s crown when they beat them in a pulsating 87 minute final at the San Pablo Stadium in Seville.
The Chinese victory means they are guaranteed at least two individual titles to go with their Sudirman Cup victory because they also have all four semi-finalists in the women’s singles – and with three of the four finalists in the women’s doubles, they began the penulitmate day of the 14-day world championships with only the men’s doubles out of reach.
Zhang and Gao, who is now the only player in with a chance of two titles after reaching the women’s doubles final with Huang Sui on a walkover, won the first game 15-10.
But the Koreans, who both had tough level doubles semi-finals less than 24 hours earlier, battled back to take the second 15-12.
At 14-9 down in the third game Kim and Ra looked out of it. But they saved match point and mounted a comeback which swept them into a 16-14 lead.
By then a successful title defence looked on the cards but big smashing Zhang refused to give up and the Chinese pair pulled back to 16-16.
A second match point was not going to slip from their grasp and to the tumultous sound of balloon banging they snatched a dramatic victory which left Kim holding his head in despair and Zhang doing his own special brand of knees-up!. |
