China hopeful of World Juniors clean sweep
November 05, 2000 - Source : IBF
Not content with their dominance of the Olympic Games and Asian Junior Championships, China seems hopeful of a clean sweep of medals on home turf at the individual World Junior Championships in Guangzhou.

And based on the seedings for the event, they''re more than capable of achieving this feat. The host nation boasts the top four seeds in the men''s and women''s singles, women''s and mixed doubles events, and also occupies the top three places in men''s doubles. The individual event kicks off on 7 November, after the conclusion of the first ever World Junior Team Championships.

Recently-crowned Asian Junior champion Lin Dan is the favourite in the men''s singles event, followed closely by compatriots Zhu Weilun, Qiu Bohui and Bao Chunlai. Indonesia''s Sony Dwi Kuncoro, runner up in the Asian Juniors, is the fifth seed, with Eric Pang as the highest ranked European in the event, seeded eighth.

In the women''s singles Yu Jin is the top seed, with Asian Junior champion and teammate Wei Yan in second.

This is the fifth edition of the World Junior Championships, played for the Bimantara Cups. In Melbourne in 1998 - the last time the championships were contested - China went home with the two singles titles and the women''s doubles trophy, leaving Malaysia with the men''s and mixed doubles medals.

International Badminton Federation will continue its trial of the "5 games to 7" scoring system throughout the event.
