Mixed fortunes for the Koreans
September 21, 2000 - Source : IBF
They lost to Indonesia’s, Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan, who they fooled at the 1999 World Championships in Cagen.

In the first of the men’s doubles semi finals in Sydney, Ha and Kim started out with great confidence. Theyd the game up to 8-3, scoring some easy points. But then the Indonesians found their nerve.

“We were aware that the technical aspects wouldn’t help much so we kept thinking we had to be more cautious instead of talking about tactics while we were on the court,” Gunawan explained about the first set. The Indonesians then scored five points in just one service chance. “We were not under pressure – it was just that in the beginning we hadn’t adjusted ourselves to the game,” Gunawan said.

After all, the Indonesians ensured themselves that the game was not a technical war anymore. “We had to dare to attack and not to be pressured by them,” he added. Candra did his task wonderfully when he seemed not to be bothered by three “fault” calls. “I just keep thinking not to be pressured and put more concentration into the game,” he explained. Their loss in the quarter finals of the World Championships didn’t play on their minds. They kept thinking about their wins. “We kept in our mind about our win at the 1999 All England and the World Grand Prix Finals,” Gunawan said.

In the final they will meet the second seeded Koreans, runners-up of the World Championships, Lee Dong Soo and Yoo Yong Sung. In the other semifinal, they met with difficult times against Malaysia’s Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah. They managed to get back in the first game when they were downed 2-0, thanks to some mistakes by Lee.

In the second game, Lee and Choong took control and led all the way. They won it 15-7 without looking back. “We entered the third game with more confidence, but then we lost our focus a little bit and that cost us. Just at that very second, the Koreans could get back into the game,” Lee said. But their coach, former olympic champion, Park Joo Bong said, “They did too much defence and didn’t get any chance to attack in the third game.”

Lee and Yoo will play Wijaya and Gunawan in the final on Thursday. “We know each other and I am confident to win that game,” he said.,They lost to Indonesia’s, Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan, who they fooled at the 1999 World Championships in Cagen. ,They lost to Indonesia’s, Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan, who they fooled at the 1999 World Championships in Cagen. ,They lost to Indonesia’s, Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan, who they fooled at the 1999 World Championships in Cagen.
