For a second consecutive day, Ong Ewe Hock and James Chua pulled off upsets against higher-ranked opponents at the 4* Proton-EON Malaysiain Penang and will now go head-to-head in the all-Malaysian final on Sunday.
Veteran Ong, defending the title he won 12 months ago under the shortened 7-point scoring system, faced a huge struggle in his match against China’s World Junior Champion Bao Chunlai, eventually taking 60 minutes to clinch the 15/12, 5/15, 15/12 win and keep his title hopes alive.
The fifth seed will now face teammate James Chua, runner-up at the 3* Swisslast March and hungry for a first ever Grand Prix win. Chua blasted compatriot Lee Tsuen Seng 15/2, 15/8 for one last step to the title, telling reporters from The Star newspaper that he felt he had the advantage over his older teammate going into Sunday’s final.
The hosts could also claim honours in the men’s doubles category, as the unseeded Choong Tan Fook and Chang Kim Wai defeated Denmark’s favourites Jens Eriksen and Martin Lundgaard Hansen in three tough games 15/8, 9/15, 15/10. The Malaysians will now face China’s Liu Yong and Chen Qiqiu who had an easier bout against England’s Simon Archer and James Anderson 15/8, 15/11.
Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms claimed their second World Grand Prix mixed doubles crown to add to their 2* Dutchtrophy from last October.
They defeated China’s Wang Wei and Zhang Yawen in straight games 11/9, 11/4, although there were mixed emotions for Emms as she crashed out of the women’s doubles later on. Playing with Jo Goode, they missed out on a place in the final at the hands of Zhang Yawen and Zhao Tingting.
As expected, it will be an all-China final as top seeds Huang Nanyan and Yang Wei defeated Deyana Lomban and Marisa Vita 4/11, 11/2, 11/6.
