While home favourite Boonsak Polsana continued his march toward victory, three of the men's singles seeds - George Rimarcdi, Saman Ismail and Przemyslaw Wacha - failed to reach the quarter-finals of the 2* Thailandin Bangkok yesterday.
Number four seed George Rimarcdi struggled from the outset against the unheralded Anupap Thiraratsakul of Thailand, and found none of the form which helped to a confident win against Indonesia's young gun Sony Dwi Kuncoro the previous day. Thiraratsakul held the advantage throughout the match - stumbling only in the third game - which concluded 7/3, 7/2, 2/7, 7/0. Later today the Thai will take on Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei, who beat Singapore's Hendra Wijaya, for a place in Saturday's semi-finals.
It was a close-fought battle for a while between seventh seed Saman Ismail and Mawardi Wiempie, with the Indonesian winning the first two games after setting. Ismail seemingly gave up in the third game, losing tamely 8/6, 8/7, 7/0.
Malaysia secured another quarter-finals berth when James Chua overcame the number six seed Przemyslaw Wacha (pictured), but only after a tough match which went the full distance. Chua asserted his grip during the first two games, but Poland's Wacha was not about to roll over. Wacha had things very much his own way in the third game, and took the gamble to not to set at 6-6 in the fourth which paid off.
Chua piled on the pressure in the deciding fifth game, and Wacha buckled, with a respectable scoreline 7/0, 7/5, 2/7, 6/7, 7/2. Chua must now beat compatriot Yong Hock Kin, eager to impress after a season dogged with injury and poor form. Yong required little effort to beat his first opponent of the tournament, Jakrapan Thanathiratham, which may go against him as the rounds get tougher.
Top seed Polsana goes to head-to-head against Budi Santoso, as expected, in today''s quarter-finals. Polsana barely broke sweat against Yogendran Khrishnan, whereas Santoso had a much tougher bout against another Malaysia, Allan Tai, which went to five games.
Second seed Ronald Susilo booked his place in the last eight with ease, beating Adisak Wiriyapadungpong 7/2, 7/2, 7/3.
The women's singles is in full swing now - top seed Marina Andrievskaya of Sweden needn't have bothered taking her tracksuit off for all the effort she expended against the host's Soratja Chansrisukol - the young Thai packed her rackets away and was off court without managing to score a single point against the tall Russian born girl.
Thailand''s second seed, Sujitra Ekmongkolpaisarn, spared equally little time for Malaysian''s K Sugita 7/3, 7/0, 7/0, and now squares up to Singapore's Luxi Xiao for a place in the semi-finals.
Indonesia's Atu Rosalina, the third favourite was forced the full distance by the host's Salakjit Polsana, and only secured her quarter-finals spot after winning the fifth and final game 8/6. England''s Tracey Hallam, seeded fourth, fared better in her clash with Dewi Tira of Indonesia, winning in straight games 7/2, 7/5, 7/2.
The women's doubles enjoyed a rare rest day yesterday, and the men's doubles showed few fiery matches. Pramote Teerwiwatana and Tesana Panvisvas are one of two seeded pairs left in the quarter-finals.
Frederik Bergstrom and Henrik Andersson were blown away 7/5, 7/1, 7/1, somewhat expectedly, by the dangerous combination of Candra Wijaya and Halim Haryanto, unseeded in this competition. Sigit Budiarto and Hadiyanto Luluk also cruised through, beating Australians Travis Denney and Ashley Brehaut 8/6, 7/0, 7/4.
Frederik Bergstrom was also ousted from the mixed doubles as well yesertday, as he an Jenny Karlsson, seeded first, were stretched to five games by Hendra Gunawan and Lita Nurlita. In today's semi-finals (the mixed doubles concludes one day earlier than the others) the Swedes take on Indonesia's Runtolalu and Widiowati.
Second seeds Khunakorn Sudhisodhi and Saralee Thungthongkam contest Candra Wijaya and Jo Novita in the second semi-final.
