After her wins in the two Grand Prix events of the 99 European circuit, we heard nothing more of Tang Chunyu . Now, the young Chinese player is back and certainly intends to trouble anyone who contests her title here in Den Bosch.
Marina Andrievskaya , the Swedish world number 19 has learnt this the hard way - she was beaten in theng round of the event by Tang 9/11, 11/8, 11/3. But this wasn’t the only surprise of the day. In only four hours of play on Wednesday evening, many of the best players had a rough time getting through to the second round. Or not getting through at all.
The other big surprise of the day was Mia Audina’s withdrawal from the event. She caught a virus in the days prior to the tournament and wasn’t able to shake it off. The adopted Dutch girl will not be able to please her crowd. Last year, in this tournament, only one month after arriving in the Netherlands and with hardly any training, she reached the final. A lot was expected from her.
Hong Kong's Wan Ting Ling, world number 26th and seeded 8th also had and early exit from the women's draw. She was beaten 2/11 and 6/11 by Zhang Ning who is not unknown to the public but whose ranking had dropped to number 72 because she's played in only a few tournaments this year. Aparna Popat outplayed Finland's Anu Weckstrom and will play Miho Tanaka of Japan in the next round. In the other half of the draw, Kelly Morgan had minor trouble against home girl Karina de Wit, with a game point against her in the second game, but she was able to finish 11/5, 13/10.
In the men’s event, the biggest upset of the day was the victory of Eric Pang of the Netherlands against Agus Hariyanto, who had reached the final in last week’s German looking quite fit at the time. Not as fit here, as he was beaten 6/15, 12/15. Indonesian Star Heryanto Arbi’s nightmare continues with a defeat in the first round again. He lost to Jens Roch of Germany in a very close match, 15/6, 6/15, 15/13. A very good day as well for the Malaysian Ramesh Nathan who outplayed a much better ranked Mark Constable (129th to 49th) and for Japanese Shinya Otsuka who beat Martin Hagberg of Sweden in three games.
The seeded players in the men’s event didn’t play, nor any of the doubles. But as thisgoes on, there may be plenty more surprises coming up.
