Taufik to join Singapore?
January 07, 2002 - Source : IBF
Speculation surrounding the next move in Taufik Hidayat's badminton career is rife once again, as the 20-year-old has been in talks with the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) president Wang Kai Yuen about a possible move to the Republic.

The world number 11 quit the Indonesian training centre last year after the Indonesian Assocation (PBSI) dropped him from the Denmarksquad for missing a training session. It followed months of tension between the player and PBSI after officials terminated the contract of Hidayat's coach, Mulyo Handoyo, who's now working for SBA alongside men's singles coach Zhao Jianhua.

SBA secretary general Robin Chan confirmed that President Wang had been in meetings with Hidayat, but declined to comment further on the outcome or details of their discussions.

Singapore's squad already comprises seven former Indonesian players - Ronald Susilo, Indra Wijaya, Hendra Wijaya and doubles players Hendry and Wandry Saputra, and Donny and Denny Prasetyo.

Questioned as to whether it was wise to take more Indonesian players into the squad, Chan replied that their own national and local players were still very young and in need for further development. He said the acquisition of high calibre players such as Taufik would help to raise the standard.
