Thais fail to defend their title
September 14, 2001 - Source : IBF
Defending champions Pramote Teerawiwatana-Tesana Panvisvas of Thailand failed to get past the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles competition of the SEA Games at the Malawati Stadium today.

LeeThe Thai number one pair suffered a shock 15-8, 13-15, 10-15 defeat to the scratch pair of Wong Choon Hann-Lee Wan Wah of Malaysia (pictured). It was the day’s only major upset as all the other quarter-final ties in all categories went on as scripted.

Wong was paired off with Lee only because the latter’s regular partner is down with a serious knee injury and would be out of action at least until the end of the year.

But the pair, who were thrown in together, made good with a sensational display, coming back from the loss of the first game.

“We lost the first game because we were trying to get our game together. Furthermore, I have not played doubles for a very long time,” said Wong.

The Malaysian pair, however, have a much bigger hurdle ahead in the semi-finals – Indonesian top seeds Candra Wijaya-Sigit Budiarto. They will have to break down their illustrious rivals tight defence and superb attacking game.

The Indonesian former world champions eased into the semi-finals with an effortless 15-5, 15-2 win over unheralded Tran Thanh Hai-Bui Quang Son of Vietnam.

The second semi-final will also be an Indonesian-Malaysian affair. Indonesia’s Tony Gunawan-Bambang Suprianto will get their chance to avenge their defeat on Tuesday to second seeds Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng.

Tony-Bambang’s defeat to Chan-Chong in the inter-team semi-finals was the turning point for Malaysia as the hosts defeated Indonesia for the title for the first time since 1993.

The men’s singles will see Indonesian Rony Augustinus playing Thai youngster Boonsak Polsana in the first semi-finals. Rony, who was an eleventh hour replacement for top seeded teammate Hendrawan, will be looking forward to make amends for his poor display in the team final on Tuesday.

But he will have his hands full with Boonsak, who has a knack of upsetting higher ranked players. The China-trained shuttler had packed off Malaysian veteran Ong Ewe Hock on Wednesday.

RoslinNeither player was challenged by their quarter-final opponents. Rony cruised to a 15-4, 15-10 win over Myanmar’s Zaw Win while Boonsak bumped out Vietnam’s Nguyen Quong Minh 15-4, 15-2.

Home favourite Roslin Hashim (pictured here with fans) will play Indonesianchampion Marleve Mainaky in the other-semi-finals. Roslin defeated Myanmar’s Lwin Aung 15-7, 15-1 while Marleve beat Filipino Kennevic Chua 15-1, 15-10 in their respective quarter-final matches.

The women’s singles semi-finals will pit top seeded Lidya Djaelawijaya of Indonesia against Malaysian Wong Miew Kheng. Another Malaysian, Ng Mee Fen will take on second seeded Thai lass Sujitra Ekmongkolpaisarn in the other semi-final.
