Two of the most experienced players at the SEA Games badminton competition - reigning world champion Hendrawan of Indonesia and Malaysian Ong Ewe Hock – will not be challenging for the gold medal at the Malawati Stadium any more.
Both players failed to recover fully from the mentally and physically challenging men’s inter-team final played less than 24 hours earlier.
Hendrawan, seeded first in the men’s singles competition, was forced to withdraw from the competition after failing to recover from muscular pulls in his legs. Hendrawan had defeated Roslin Hashim in the first singles of the inter-team competition. But the strain was just too much for his aging legs.
The organisers accepted the entry of Rony Agustinus in place of Hendrawan in the draw and the youngster promptly booked his place in the quarter-finals with a 15-1, 15-8 win over Singapore’s Noor Izwan Paini.
Like Hendrawan, Ong (pictured) was also unable to recover fully after helping Malaysia win the inter-team title for the first time since 1993. Ong, the reigning Malaysianchampion, fell victim to Thailand’s Boonsak Polsana 11-15, 9-15 in the second round.
The victory has boosted the 19-year-old shuttler’s hopes of winning the singles title. He plays Vietnam’s Nguyen Quang Minh in the last eight.
“I am more confident now, especially with Ong and Hendrawan out of the competition. My biggest hurdle would be Rony in the semi-finals and probably Roslin in the final,” said Boonsak.
Malaysian coach Indra Gunawan said that Ong did not play his normal game.
“Boonsak was nowhere close to the form he displayed at the Asia Cup. But he won because Ong was making all the mistakes,” said Indra.
With the early exit of Ong, Malaysian hopes of another gold now lie solely on the shoulders of Roslin. Roslin booked his place in the quarter-finals with an easy 15-5, 15-3 win over Singapore’s Ho Hee Teck. He plays unheralded Lwin Aung of Myanmar in the quarter-finals.
“I am all geared up to help Malaysia win another gold to improve their overall haul,” said Roslin.
There were no surprises in the men’s doubles, with the fancied players moving into the quarter-finals. Top seeds Candra Wijaya-Sigit Budiarto are through to the last eight without even having to lift their racquets. They received a first round bye.
Defending champions Pramote Teerawiwatana-Tesana Panvisvas are also in the last eight after packing off Brunei’s Ermadina Hj Talip-Mohd Fadzli Hj Masri 15-1, 15-1.
They play the Malaysian scratch pair of Lee Wan Wah-Wong Choong Hann in the quarter-finals. Lee and Wong have been paired off as the formers regular partner Choong Tan Fook is nursing a bad knee injury.
The top singles players did not play today and will begin their campaign on Thursday with Indonesian Lidya Djaelawijaya favoured to win the title. While Lidya has been given a fairly easy draw, her biggest threat for the gold, Thailand’s Sujitra Ekmongkolpaisarn, has a rocky road ahead.
Sujitra, who was beaten by Lidya during Thailand’s 1-3 inter-team final defeat to Indonesia, play Indonesian number two Cindana Hartono in her first match and has a likely semi-final match-up against fast improving Ng Mee Fen of Malaysia.
