Wong distraught after controversial loss

Denmark’s Peter Gade was thrown a lifeline at the Brunei World Grand Prix Finals today after two dubious decisions rattled opponent Wong Choong Hann in the fifth and final game of their Group A match.
Gade stormed through the first game 7/1, but Wong (pictured) quickly picked up the pace to take the second and third, and looked confident of victory as they edged into the fourth game of the match in which Gade was troubled once again with a knee injury.
But this confidence was shattered not once, but twice – a Gade smash clipped the net and looked to go out, but was called in by the line-judge, and having managed to recover from that set-back, Wong managed to secure a match point against the Dane, but was fouled for allegedly touching the net by Welsh umpire Dave Davies.
Gade went on to win in the deciding game, and an incensed Malaysian singles coach Indra Gunawan maintains he has video footage showing it was the shuttle, and not Wong, that hit the net.
But that proved no comfort to the reigning Commonwealth champion, who retired distraught to the changing room after his 7/1, 4/7, 3/7, 8/7, 7/4 loss, and although the Malaysian has been involved in the two longest and most dynamic matches of the tournament so far, his last Group A match tomorrow against Budi Santoso is inconsequential, for him at least.
Gade must now win his last group match against Olympic bronze medallist Xia Xuanze if he’s to make it through to the weekend.
Malaysia’s hopes of a semi-finals berth are still alive, though, but Roslin Hashim will have to oust world champion Hendrawan in their Group B head-to-head, and Ong Ewe Hock must overcome world number one Chen Hong.
It was a bad day at the office for Gade’s girlfriend Camilla Martin, who’s out of contention after only her first match of the tournament. The former world champion lost 7/8, 8/6, 7/1, 7/1 to arch-rival Dai Yun – the Chinese girl’s second win assured her of the only qualifying spot in Group D.
World champion Gong Ruina ended Wales’ hopes when she beat Commonwealth champion Kelly Morgan in four games 7/2, 7/1, 2/7, 7/0 – Morgan’s compatriot Richard Vaughan was also dumped out of the competition by Indonesiachampion Marleve Mainaky just minutes earlier.
In the men’s doubles competition, top seeds Michael Sogaard and Jim Laugesen took a knock when they were beaten by Indonesia’s Halim Haryanto (one half of the world championship-winning combination) and Sigit Budiarto 7/0, 8/6, 0/7, 7/1 in 43 minutes, and Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan are still on course to retain their title after thumping Denmark’s Martin Lundgaard Hansen and Lars Paaske 7/3, 7/1, 7/0 in just 13 minutes – the shortest match of the championships to date.
Last-minute qualifiers Michal Logosz and Robert Mateusiak almost scored an upset win against Jens Eriksen and Jesper Larsen, pushing the Danes into five games before losing 4/7, 7/0, 4/7, 7/1, 7/4.
China’s Olympic and world champions Zhang Jun and Gao Ling and Denmark’s Jens Eriksen and Mette Schjoldager are certain of their places in the semi-finals on Saturday, after winning their respective Group A matches in the mixed doubles today. The Chinese saw off Frederik Bergstrom and Jenny Karlsson of Sweden, and Eriksen and Schjoldager beat Thailand’s Khunakorn Sudhisodhi and Saralee Thungthongkam.
With most of the semi-finals places still left to fight for, make you follow our live scoring tomorrow at World Badminton Online!
