This year’s JVC Asian Badminton Championships (JVC ABC) marks the 20th Anniversary of the event. Created in 1962 and held annually since 1991, the JVC ABC has been one of the top events in Asia and stands as a tradition in Asian sports. Today it was announced that the 20th Annual JVC Asian Badminton Championships will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from November 1 – 5. In commemoration of the 20th Anniversary, this year’s event is certain to feature some of the Sydney Olympic medallists hailing from Asia.
Over the past 20 events, the Championships have been held in 12 cities from Lucknow, India to Shanghai, China. Some of the event’s past champions include the sport’s top players such as: Park Joo Bong in Doubles, Rashid Sidek and Sun Jun in Men’s Singles, and the amazing 5-time champion, Ye Zhaoying in Ladies’ Singles. In fact, Ye Zhaoying won the event three times in a row (from 1992 – 1994) and will be awarded with the Tong Yung Kai Cup Trophy for her amazing achievement.
The JVC ABC will be held this year at the Istora Senayan stadium in the heart of “badminton country” Jakarta, Indonesia. “It was our decision to bring the 20th Anniversary event to Jakarta as Indonesia has been a major supporter of the sport both through hosting events and providing world-class players over the past three decades,” said Datuk Punch Gunalan, Secretary General of the Asian Badminton Confederation.
The 20th anniversary event will feature Olympic Medallists from Sydney as most of the sport’s top players are from Asia. Of all the medals given out at the Olympic Games since 1992, only one medal was won by a non-Asian player (Paul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen, Men’s Singles Gold Medal 1996). Therefore, we expect to see most of this year’s Olympic medallists at the JVC ABC in Jakarta. Mr. Leo Wiranata, Secretary General of the Indonesian Badminton Association, salutes the solidarity of the Asian Championships, “We welcome players from all across Asia to participate in the 20th anniversary event this year in Jakarta. Through this event, we can work together to further develop the sport in Asia.”
This year’s Sydney Olympics will go a long way towards determining the #1 players in JVC Asian Badminton Rankings. Top qualifiers who confirm participation at the JVC ABC 2000 will each receive USD 1,000 for finishing in the #1 position as the top seed at the event. Last year’s rankings winners included three of the world’s #1 players at the time (Dai Yun, Ladies’ Singles; Ge Fei/Gu Jun, Ladies’ Doubles; Kim Dong Moon/Ra Kyung Min, Mixed Doubles).
Both media and fans alike can get the latest news on the JVC ABC event through the event website: www.jvc-badminton.com.
