Finally after more than 30 years, the shuttlecock is back in our court! From August 21 – 26, the Philippines will host the 2001 JVC Asian Badminton Championships at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City. This will only be 2nd time the Philippines will play host, the first being in 1969, to this annual tournament which brings together the best badminton players in Asia.
Organized by the Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC), the Philippine Badminton Association (PBA) together with IMG, the world’s foremost athlete management company, and JVC, this year’s tournament promises to deliver superb badminton action which hopefully will help popularize the sport of badminton among Filipinos.
Players from more than 17 countries are expected to join this year’s tournament including: World no. 1 and Asia’s no. 1 Gao Ling and Huang Sui of China (Ladies’ Doubles), Sydney Olympic champs Zhang Jun and Gao Ling (Mixed Doubles), Indonesia’s Hendrawan (Sydney Olympics Silver Medalist in Men’s Singles) and the Men’s Doubles tandem of Tony Gunawan (Sydney Olympics Gold medalist) and Halim Haryanto.
Also expected are defending champions Xie Xinfang of China (Ladies’ Singles), Korea’s Lee Hyo Jung and Kim Kyung Jin (Ladies’ Doubles) and Asia’s No. 2 Taufik Hidayat (Men’s Singles) who wowed Filipino fans during his recent Manila visit at the JVCBadminton Championships.
Top Filipino badminton players, Kennie and Kennevic Asuncion, are also expected to seek action in this year’s competition together with several members of the National Team. Fresh from their victories in the highly successful JVCBadminton Championships held last month at the Glorietta, the brother and sister tandem will be pitted against some of the best badminton players in the world.
Winners of the tournament will receive medals, trophies and cash prizes totaling USD 150,000. JVC, the Japanese electronic giant and event title sponsor since 1997, will provide the lucrative cash prizes.
Among the highlights of the tournament is the JVC Asian Badminton Rankings. Launched in 1999, it aims to recognize the efforts and inspire strong performance among Asian players as well as act as a mechanism for developing seedings at the annual JVC Asian Badminton Championships. Players who finish number 1 in their categories will receive USD 1,000 from JVC and will be seeded number 1 in the 2001 JVC Asian Badminton Championships.
