Today, JVC announced their commitment to sponsor the 1999 JVC Asia Cup which will be held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on November 10 - 15 at the Phan Dinh Phung Indoor stadium. This year's event marks the second time that the event has been held in its current format as the Asian national team championship. Current champions, Indonesia, have an automatic entry as defending champions as do Vietnam as the event's host. Indonesia will have to travel to Vietnam to defend their title against such strong badminton nations as China (who did not compete in the last event), Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and Japan who are all qualifying for the top 6 remaining positions.

The JVC Asia Cup is jointly organized by the Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC), the Vietnam Badminton Federation VBF, the Ho Chi Minh City Badminton Association (HCMCBA) and the International Management Group (IMG). Speaking at a Press Conference to announce the event, VBF Vice Chairman Mr. Nguyen Minh Thong thanked the organizers for bringing this prestigious new event to Vietnam. " The Vietnam Badminton Federation is proud to be the host of the JVC Asia Cup this year. The event brings a tremendous opportunity for the VBF to gain experience in staging a major international badminton event. We also hope that in seeing an competing against the world's top badminton players, our National players and future stars will be inspired to increase their level of competition in the future".

Similar to IBF's Thomas Cup event, the JVC Asia Cup is a men's national team competition. However, one major difference is that the JVC Asia Cup will provide prize money, whereas the Thomas Cup does not. This year's JVC Asia Cup will offer USD100,000 in total prize money with the top team being awarded the largest prize in the sport of badminton which is USD 50,000. Second place finishers will received USD 25,000 while third and fourth places will take USD 15,000 and USD 10,000 respectively.

The format of the JVC Asia Cup, as the Asian national team championship for men, also differs from the Thomas Cup. Each tie in the JVC Asia Cup is comprised of 3 matches (2 singles and 1 doubles) and a team must win two out of three matches in order to win the tie. The eight nations will be divided into two groups for the preliminary round-robin ties, then the top two countries in each group will advance to the Semi Finals for a knock-out format.

ABC Secretary-General Datuk Punch Gunalan said that Vietnamese can expect world class action at the JVC Asia Cup Championship. "Most of the world's top players in the sport of badminton come from Asia. This why the Asia Cup will feature world-class action from all of the participating teams," he said.

"We are proud to have selected Vietnam as the host of this year's event and hope that the Vietnamese public will give the event and its stars the outstanding support it has given badminton in the past," he added. Mr. Gunalan was referring to the other world-class events that Vietnam has hosted which include the 1994 World Cup and 1996-97 JVC Vietnam.

Tomoyasu Fujiwara, General Director of JVC Vietnam added, " JVC is proud to become the title sponsor of the JVC Asia Cup this year. JVC's goal is to support the Asian events in the world-class sport of badminton. As Asians excel in badminton, it is appropriate for JVC to participate in the JVC Asia Cup. This strategy is in line with our sponsorship of Asia's top individual event, the JVC Asian Badminton Championships," The JVC Asian Badminton Championships will be held this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from September 15 - 19.

In addition to JVC, sponsors of the 1999 event in Ho Chi Minh City include Indonesian drinking water product, Aqua, and world-class badminton equipment supplier, Yonex.
