Malaysia second seed crashes out of Asian Champs

The Malaysian camp suffered bitter disappointment at the Asian Badminton Championships earlier today when second seed Wong Choong Hann was eliminated by a player 110 places below him in the world rankings.

WongCommonwealth champion Wong (pictured) suffered the shock defeat at the hands of Indonesia's Rony Agustinus, currently ranked 116th, losing 15/12, 15/6.

That leaves Malaysia with no players in the men's singles event, as teammate Yong Hock Kin was also defeated by top seed Taufik Hidayat. The Indonesian idol struggled in theng game, afterwards admitting he made several unnecessary mistakes, but held on to take it 17/16. The 19-year-old world number five player reasserted himself in the second game, easing through 15/3.

He will take on India's rising star Pulella Gopichand, who overcame China's Chen Yu in three hard-fought games 15/7, 16/17, 15/13.

Hidayat's compatriot Marleve Mainaky ensured there were three Indonesians in the semi finals when he beat Singapore's young gun Ronald Susilo after three tough games 6/15, 15/13, 15/5.

In the women's singles, the four semi finalists are already lined up, minus Indonesia's second seed Lidya Djaelawijaya who caused the biggest upset of the day yesterday when she was knocked out by Japan's Fumi Iwakame.

Korea's top seed Lee Kyung Won beat another home hopeful, Cindana Hartono Kusuma, for her place in the semis. She now takes on the last remaining Indonesian, Elllen Angelina. The second semi final comprises Yumi Iwakame and China's Xie Xingfang.

Top seeds Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah are still on course for a place in the men's doubles final. The Olympic semi finalists silenced Thailand's Sudket Prapakamol and Patapol Ngersrisuk a short while ago 15/4, 15/3 and will now face the new Indonesian combination Candra Wijaya and Antonius Budi Arianth. They beat Chien Yu Hsun and Chang Fung Chin of Chinese Taipei 15/1, 15/7.

MainakyRexy Mainaky and Tony Gunawan (pictured) are also through to the last four, and will take on either Yung Sung Gyun and Park Young Duk or Iman Sodikin and Luluk Hadiyanto, who caused a storm yesterday when they ousted the second seeds Kitipon Kitikul and Khunakorn Sudhisodhi of Thailand.

In the women's doubles, number one seeds Etty Tantri and Cynthia Tuwankotta had a relatively easy ride into the semi finals, beating Chan Mei Mei and Li Wing Mui of Hong Kong 15/0, 15/12. They now face Korea's Lee Kyung Won and Chung Jae Hee, with Rossi Riani and Diah Novita and Lee Hyo Jung-Yim Kyung Jin comprising the second semi.

In the mixed event, Tony Gunawan and Etty Tantri were the biggest names to miss out on the a place in the quarter finals - they lost to the newly paired Bambang Suprianto and Minarti Timur 15/11, 15/12
