Against all the predictions, the unseeded Rony Agustinus pulled off a spectacular win over Marleve Mainaky to line himself up against top seed Taufik Hidayat in tomorrow’s final. Yesterday, a plucky Agustinus scuppered Malaysia’s last hopes of a singles victory when he beat the second seed Wong Choong Hann. Now, although he hasn’t played Hidayat before, Agustinus is confident he will put up a strong fight after beating Mainaky in straight games 15/10, 15/5.

Hidayat, the world number five, beat India’s Pulella Gopichand to secure his place in the all Indonesian final.

Another Indonesian 1-2 is certain in the mixed event, where Bambang Suprianto and Minarti Timur will take on top seeds Wahyu Agung and Emma Ermawati. Suprianto and Timur beat Santoso Sugiharjo and Eny Widiowati 15//11, 15/12, while Tri Kusharyanto and Vita Marisa couldn’t hold out their initial struggle against Agung and Ermawati, losing 17/14, 15/3.

Fumi Iwawaki’s incredible run in the women’s singles has come to an end. The Japanese girl, who caused a huge upset by beating top seed Lidya Djaelawijaya on home soil, lost convincingly to China’s Xie Xingfang, 11/0, 11/2. Xie’s opponent will be Indonesia’s Ellen Angelina, who beat the top seeded Korean, Lee Kyung Won 11/0, 11/4.

Olympic gold medallists Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan will not be facing each other in tomorrow’s men’s doubles final. Wijaya and partner Antonius Budi Arianth lost to Sydney semi finalists Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah in two straight games 15/12, 15/6. Past and present Olympic champions Rexy Mainaky and Tony Gunawan will be their opponents. Mainaky and Gunawan (who first teamed up during the Thomas Cup in May) beat compatriots Imam Sodikin and Luluk Hadiyanto 15/13, 15/1.

Korea and Indonesia will contest the women’s doubles final, in a tournament bereft of the top Chinese players – Lee Kyung Won and Yim Kyung Jin will play Etty Tantri and Minarti Timur.
