Three ABC crowns for hosts Indonesia

Teenager Taufik Hidayat set himself back on course after his Olympic disappointment by taking the men’s singles title at the JVC Asian Badminton Championships earlier today.

The top seed lost his way in the first game, leading his unseeded compatriot Rony Agustinus 14/12 but then stumbling to lose ther 17/14.

But the world number five showed his true form in the second game, and upped the pressure on Agustinus to win the second 15/2, finishing the decider almost as quickly, 15/3 to scoop the $11,000 winners cheque.

The first title of the day, however, went to Bambang Suprianto and Minarti Timur in the Mixed Doubles. Timur – a Sydney silver medallist – and Suprianto faced an aggressive challenge from their teammates Wahyu Agung and Emma Ermawati, often forced into playing side by side (their weakest formation) but the experience of the elder pair showed through and they clinched the title in straight games 15/10, 15/12.

The experience of former Olympic champion Rexy Mainaky also helped the hosts to their third and final title of the Championships in the men’s doubles. Mainaky, the newly-signed England coach, and partner Tony Gunawan left few chances to their Malaysian opponents Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah who were desperately trying to give their fans at home something to cheer about after some earlier disappointments in the tournament.

But Malaysia must wait some more for that elusive title, as the Indonesians finished the job in straight games 15/8, 15/9.

In the women’s singles final, China’s Xie Xingfang added a second major title to her belt after beating Ellen Angelina in three games. The Hong Kongchampion took a while to find her feet in theng game, and a fourth title looked possible for the host nation when Angelina stormed ahead to win 2/11 in the first game. But the 19-year-old Chinese youngster had a change of tactics and managed to turn things around, closing the second and third games 11/7, 11/3 to take home the only title for China in these Championships.

The Korean girls, Lee Hyo Jung and Yim Kyung Jin bagged the women’s doubles title, beating Indonesia’s Etty Tantri and Minarti Timur in straight games 15/8, 15/13.
