This year’s JVC Asian Badminton Championships (JVC ABC) marks the 20th Anniversary of the event. Created in 1962 and held annually since 1991, the JVC ABC has been one of the top events in Asia and stands as a tradition in Asian sports. Today it was announced that the 20th Annual JVC Asian Badminton Championships will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from November 1 – 5. In commemoration of the 20th Anniversary, this year’s event is certain to feature some of the Sydney Olympic medallists hailing from Asia.

Indonesia's youthful badminton phenom, Taufik Hidayat, today capped his 18th birthday celebrations by winning his second gold medal of the 20th South East Asian Games in Brunei. Hidayat who turned eighteen this past Tuesday (August 10) beat Wong Choon Hann of Malaysia in a closely-contested men's singles championship match 15-10, 11-15 and 15-11.

Rising badminton star Taufik Hidajat has criticized the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) for skimming off 50 percent of a sponsorship deal he recently signed with a Japan-based electronic company. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a media conference on Friday, Taufik said the association's cut was too much. He claimed the association was "doing nothing to get sponsorship deals".

JVC and IMG today announced that this year's JVC Asian Badminton Rankings champions will each receive USD 1,000. The champions will be determined in October two weeks prior to the JVC Asian Badminton Championships on November 1 - 5. Asian players have from now up until that time to accumulate points in IBF-sanctioned events in order to qualify in the #1 position for the JVC Rankings. This season starts off with a number of notable new faces on the Asian Badminton scene while some big names have fallen away.

The deal, brokered by International Management Group, includes the right for JVC to use Taufik's images for its advertising and promotional purposes in Asia. This arrangement continues on JVC's successful relationship with the sport of Badminton in Asia as a promotional vehicle for its products. Taufik was chosen by JVC as he embodies the qualities of JVC and fits the image of JVC's Audio/Video market profile.

JVC and IMG today announced the upgrading of the www.jvc-badminton.com website. In 1999, JVC together with IMG launched the website in order to provide more regular information about the major events taking place in Asian Badminton. In its inaugural year in 1999, the site was viewed by more than 200,000 badminton fans throughout Asia from July through December. The site focused on events occurring in Asia throughout that period with a special emphasis on the JVC Asian Badminton Championships (Kuala Lumpur, September) and the JVC Asia Cup (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam).
