Scoring debate ends with 3 x 15 decision

The IBF today took its decision on badminton’s future scoring format, with Council Members opting for a return to the old 3 x 15 system, with a slight change of format to the women’s and mixed doubles events.
Following the decision taken by delegates to the Annual General Meeting last Sunday in Guangzhou, IBF Council were empowered to decide on a possible scoring change, and the 20 Members present at today’s 6-hour meeting voted 12 to 8 in favour of a change to the following format, effective 1 August 2002:
Men’s Singles: 3 x 15
Women’s Singles: 3 x 11
Men’s Doubles: 3 x 15
Women’s Doubles: 3 x 11
Mixed Doubles: 3 x 11
Previously the women’s and mixed doubles events were the best of 3 games to 15 points.
IBF President Korn Dabbaransi told reporters at a news conference following the Council meeting that although the experimental system had proved popular in some quarters, IBF would now find other ways to popularize the game and make it more TV friendly.
Major events to undergo facelift
The Council also agreed to implement changes to all of IBF’s major events – draw sizes at the World Championships from 2005 (and possibly 2003, pending discussions with the Badminton Association of England) will be restricted to 64 in each event, but the major changes come in the world team events: the Thomas, Uber and Sudirman Cups.
The Thomas & Uber Cups from 2004 will face changes at both the qualifying level and the Final Stage. Instead of the regular two qualifying zones (usually held one in Asia and one in Europe) each continent will host its own qualifying stage for the Thomas & Uber Cup competitions, with teams only able to enter the qualifying event in their own continent, unlike the current set-up.
Successful teams from each of the five continents will then progress to a 12-team Finals format, which will see play in groups for the initial days before becoming a knockout tournament from the quarter-finals onwards.
From 2005, the Sudirman Cup (world mixed team championships) will also change to a 12-team format, with teams able to qualifying for this “final” stage through their own Continental Team Championships.
These changes, while making it more affordable for teams to take part in badminton’s team events, will also ensure that every continent is represented to reflect their true “world” team championships billing.
Council also endorsed Canada, subject to financial considerations, as hosts for the 2004 World Junior Team Championships and World Junior Championships for the Bimantara Cups.
