First GP for Chua on home soil
July 01, 2002 - Source : IBF
After falling at the final hurdle at the Swissback in March, Malaysia's James Chua finally notched up a first Grand Prix title on home soil at the Proton-EON Malaysiayesterday, toppling teammate Ong Ewe Hock in straight games.

The 23-year-old Chua - Malaysia's national champion - missed out on the Swiss title at the hands of Indonesia's Marleve Mainaky and was keen to prove his worth in front of his home fans at the Penang International Sports Arena.

And he did so in style, humbling veteran teammate and defending champion Ong Ewe Hock 15/10, 15/6 to scoop the 4* title and a pay cheque of US$ 9,600.

On paper, it was an upset win for the world number 45 over his 9th-ranked opponent, but Chua was confident of success going into the final.

"I have been trying to win international honours for some time and I'm proud that I have finally achieved it," he told The Star after his victory.

Chua's wasn't the only upset on court yesterday, as top seed Camilla Martin - gunning for a second Grand Prix title this year to add to her All England crown - was downed by yet another Chinese opponent, Hu Ting.

Denmark's world number one was beaten in straight games 11/8, 11/6 by her sixth-seeded opponent, meaning the Danes will return home empty handed from their trip to Malaysia, in spite of occupying a number of the seeded places across the five disciplines.

The Chinese team left with three out of five gold medals thanks to Liu Yong and Chen Qiqiu's win over home hopefuls Choong Tan Fook and Chang Kim Wai 17/14, 15/3 in just 40 minutes.

Huang Nanyan and Yang Wei took China's third title after emerging victorious from the all-Chinese women's doubles final. They beat Zhang Yawen and Zhao Tingting in straight games 11/5, 11/5.

Final results:

Men's Singles: James Chua (MAS) bt Ong Ewe Hock (MAS) 15/10, 15/6

Women's Singles: Hu Ting (CHN) bt Camilla Martin (DEN) 11/8, 11/6

Men's Doubles: Liu Yong & Chen Qiqiu (CHN) bt Choong Tan Fook & Chang Kim Wai (MAS) 17/14, 15/3

Women's Doubles: Huang Nanyan & Yang Wei (CHN) bt Zhang Yawen & Zhao Tingting (CHN) 11/5, 11/5

Mixed Doubles (played Saturday): Nathan Robertson & Gail Emms (ENG) bt Wang Wei & Zhang Yawen (CHN) 11/9, 11/4
