Indonesians roar to men’s doubles title

OLYMPIC champion Tony Gunawan and new partner Halim Haryanto today stunned defending champions Kim Dong Moon and Ha Tae Kwon to take the men’s doubles title in the first of four finals on the last day of the Seville World Championships.
The fifth seeds beat the unseeded Koreans in 48 minutes by an amazing 15-0, 15-13 on their third match point to give Indonesia their first title of the championships.
Kim, looking tired, and Ha were never in the first game and were trailing 2-0 in the second before they troubled the scorer. The Indonesians pulled away to 9-3 but at last Kim and Ha buckled down to it and clawed their way back into the match.
So much so that they actually went ahead at 10-9. But it proved to be a false dawn.
Gunawan and Haryanto were the sharper on the day, with Kim paying the price of a tough mixed doubles semi-final and final and a hard men’s doubles semi-final.
At this level it is hard to command two disciplines and although Kim did so in Cagen two years ago, in Seville he was to go away with two silvers instead of two golds.
A lucky Indonesian net cord helped the Indonesians go in front again and at 14-10 they stood at match point. But Korea mustered a little bit of late defiance, saving that one, pulling back to 14-13 and saving a second match point.
But it was third time lucky for Indonesia and when Kim put a service return out the Indonesians were the new world champions.
The bronze medals went to the two Malaysian pairs, Chew Choon Eng and Chan Chong Ming and Lee Wan Wah and Choong Tan Fook. |
