There were few surprises on theng day of the Chinese Bank Hong Kong as most of the players had the luxury of a first-round bye.
Singapore's Indra Wijaya provided the only real upset of the tournament so far - the world number 16 was seeded for his first ever win in a World Grand Prix, but has pulled out of the event, conceding a walkover to local hero Ng Wei.
Reasons for his withdrawal were unknown at the time of publication, but his absence is sure to be a bitter disappointment for the Singapore camp, whose hopes of men's singles glory now rest on their number eight seed Ronald Susilo.
Elsewhere in the men''s singles draw, Frenchchampion Abhinn Shyam Gupta beat Hong Kong's Kai Wai Tsoi 7/4, 7/1, 7/0 to progress through to the second round where he''ll meet Japan''s Yuichi Ikeda.
The Malaysian contingent also survived the first day, with Pei Wei Chung, world junior semi-finalist Lee Chong Wei and Ramesh Nathan all enjoying straight games victories.
In the women's singles, top seed Jun Jae Youn hardly broke sweat in her match against Hong Kong's Ka Shun Ng, winning 7/0, 7/1, 7/0 to earn a second round bout against another Hong Kong hopeful, Wing Mui Li. SEA Games gold medallist and second seed Sujitra Ekmongkolpaisarn of Thailand had an equally easy win against Kennie Asuncion of the Philippines, 7/1, 7/2, 7/5.
England''s number four seed Tracey Hallam was bumped out of contention by Indonesian unknown Dewi Tira after a gruelling five games, 7/8, 7/4, 8/7, 3/7, 7/5, while the host's third seed Wai Chee Koon required little effort to win her first match - Macau''s Sao Chi Lei failed to win a point, setting Koon up against Malaysia's K Sugita in the second round.
All three of the Philippines' men's doubles pairs survived the first day of competition, ousting three local pairs in the process. Kennevic Asuncion and Naresh Ramnani beat Yuk Wong Hung and Yan Kit Chan, Ian Piencenaves and Arovas Amahit defeated Lok Tin Tam and Wing Kit Chan, and Lloyd Escoses and Brandon Chan overcame Yuen Kin Yuen and Ching Hang Chan.
Asuncion and Ramnani will most likely be saying their farewells later today, as their secod round is against top seeds and Olympic silver medallists Lee Dong Soo and Yoo Yong Sung of Korea.
There was little action in the women''s doubles yesterday, with only two first round matches to play. Thailand's Duang Anong Arunkesorn and Kulcha Worawichitchaikul made it through to the second round with their 8/6, 7/2, 1/7, 7/1 win over Yukiko Kataito and Chihiro Ohsaka of Japan. Teammates Yuko Watanabe and Yumi Fujisake fared somewhat better, thrashing Kong Kong's Wong Fan Chu and Man Ching Wong 7/0, 7/0, 7/0.
Top seeds Kim Dong Moon and Ra Kyung Min have progressed with even greater ease through to the mixed doubles quarter-finals - and they haven't even struck a shuttle yet! The 1999 world champions had a first round bye, and second round opponents Hiroshi Kagaya and Yuko Watanabe conceded a walkover.
In the three mixed matches played yesterday, Malaysia's Ng Kean Kok and Wong Pei Tty beat Tsuyoshi Fukui and Yumi Fujisaki, scratch pair Ma Che Kong and Minarti Timur defeated Hong Kong's Agus Hariyanto and Ching Man Siu, and Hong Chien Hun and Norhakisin Amin beat Tsz Yin Wong and Man Ching Wong, also of Hong Kong.
