Injury-troubled Gade looking to defend home title
October 09, 2001 - Source : IBF
Injury-troubledPeter Gade will be hoping to put his injury woes behind him when he steps on court to defend his title at the Realkredit Denmarknext week (16-21 October).

The world number three - whose knee cartilage problems prevented him from reclaiming his World Grand Prix Finals title back in August - is the second seed at the prestigious 6* event in Cagen, which, with a prize find of US$250,000 is the most lucrative World Grand Prix event alongside the Korea

Gade (pictured) was forced to skip the Chinalast month as a result of his injury, but will be hoping to give the his fans something to cheer for at the Farum Arena when he his campaign against England's Andrew South.

Chen Hong - world bronze medallist and runner-up at the All Englandback in March - is the top seed in Denmark and will be looking to better his last tournament win, which came at the Dutchlast year where he beat Malaysian Roslin Hashim, who's the fourth seeded player in Cagen.

Hashim (pictured) will be trying to recapture the form which saw him win two GP titles in a row - the Swiss and Japan - earlier this year. A win at the SEA Games on home soil last month will have boosted his confidence, and another in Denmark would surely provide a welcome birthday present for the Malaysian, who turns 26 on 23 October just after the tournament ends. Hisng match is against Germany's Bjoern Joppien, while Chen takes on Singapore's Ronald Susilo.

Marleve Mainaky, as the third seed, will look to prove that his win at the Indonesiawas no accident, while the fifth seeded Wong Choong Hann will be desperate to break his runners-up curse. The 24-year-old Malaysian has failed to win a single title since his Commonwealth Games gold medal in 1998, even though he's reached the final of no less than five Grand Prix events since. Wong's most recent near-misses came at the Singaporein August, where he lost to arch-rival Taufik Hidayat, and the Chinalast month where he narrowly beaten by Xia Xuanze.

Seventh seed Pullela Gopichand also has a point to prove in Cagen - the soft-spoken Indian has made little impact since his All Englandvictory back in March.

World number one and reigning champion Zhou Mi will be out to deny Camilla Martin the chance of a title on home soil, just as she did last year. Martin had been the Danishtitleholder since 1997 until Zhou beat the 1999 World Champion in last year's event.

Top seeded Zhou (pictured), the World Grand Prix Finals champion, is drawn to meet the number four seed Martin in the semi-finals - that's if Martin can get past another strong Chinese opponent, Zeng Yaqiong, who she's likely to meet in the second round.

Zhang Ning, Singaporewinner and Asian Champion, is the second seed in the women's singles, and will face Germany's Katja Michalowsky in her first match of the tournament.

Danish pairs occupy the top seeded spots in all three of the doubles disciplines. Michael Sogaard and Jim Laugesen are the men's doubles favourites in what may well be Sogaard's last Danish- the 32-year-old is expected to make an imminent announcement on his future in badminton.

The pair should progress untroubled through to at least the quarter-finals, where they are drawn to meet Indonesia's Halim Haryanto, now playing with Hadiyanto Luluk after the shock retirement of his World Championship-winning partner Tony Gunawan.

Martin Lundgaard Hansen and Lars Paaske are the second seeded pair, with Malaysia's world bronze medallists Chew Choon Eng and Chan Chong Ming as third favourites and Jens Eriksen and Jesper Larsen seeded fourth.

China's best women's doubles pairs have opted out of this event, paving the way for top seeds Helene Kirkegaard and Rikke Olsen to add a home win to their German success last week - but second seeds Mette Schjoldager and Ann-Lou Jorgensen will have other ideas, and will be looking to reverse the German result in their favour in Cagen.

Majken Vange and Pernille Harder are the third seeded pair ahead of Germany's Nicole Grether and Nicol Pitro.

World Grand Prix Finals champions Jens Eriksen and Mette Schjoldager (pictured) are favourites in the mixed event, and look set to go head-to-head against their second seeded teammates Sogaard and Olsen in the final - the Danish pairs have each won three of their past international encounters, so a meeting between them in the final would certainly be one to watch!

We'll bring you all the action from the Realkredit Denmark- the penultimate Grand Prix event of 2001 - all next week at World Badminton Online.
