Like a bad daytime soap opera, the world of Indonesian badminton star Mia Audina took another turn on Tuesday when the International Badminton Federation rejected the applications filed by the Nederland Badminton Bond (the Dutch badminton association) for her to compete in the upcoming Konica Singaporeand in the Indonesianbadminton tournaments as part of the Dutch team. Earlier this month on August 7, Audina had resigned from the Indonesian badminton association after the association had turned down her request to move to and train in Rotterdam, the Netherlands while continuing to compete for Indonesia.
The nineteen year-old Audina had made her request so that she could be with Tylio Lobman, her Indonesian-Dutch husband of several months, who had found an excellent job in Rotterdam. The Indonesian association had denied her request and had given Mia an ultimatum - train at the Indonesian national center in Cipayung or leave the national team.
Audina who had been at odds with some of the Indonesian association officers and coaches over her romantic escapades with Mr. Lobman, her training center violations and her weight chose to follow her heart and her husband. She left the national center in Cipayung and arranged to play for the Dutch badminton association on the basis of her husband's Dutch citizenship and her taking up residence in Rotterdam.
The Dutch then entered her in the Singapore and Indonesian as part of their team. The Indonesians however informed the International Badminton Federation that Audina had been a member of the Indonesian association until August 7. The federation then rejected Audina's entry, citing a section of the federation's competition rules which requires a minimum 3-month residency and membership in a national association prior to being allowed to compete in a federation-sanctioned tournament.
With the federation's decision to enforce the 3-month rule, Audina will not be eligible to compete in an international badminton tournament for the Netherlands until the Chinain mid-November. Audina will also not be able to compete as part of the Dutch team in a team event like the Uber Cup and the European team championships or high-profile individual competitions like the world championships and the Olympic Games until mid-December, 2000 under another federation rule that requires the lapse of a period of two years before a player from one national team can compete for another country.
Audina's last team competition as part of the Indonesian national team was at the Asian Games in December, 1998.
