Boonsak Polsana is on course for his second final in a month, after ousting Bjoern Joppien to book his place in the Chinese Bank Hong Kongearlier today.
The young Thai enjoyed an impressive run at the SEA Games individual event a couple of weeks back, only to fall at the last hurdle, losing to Malaysian Roslin Hashim in the final.
But China-trained Polsana has proven he can turn on the pressure when it matters, and calmly took the win against Germany’s Joppien in straight games 8/7, 7/1, 7/2 to set up a semi-final bout with local hero Ng Wei. Ng has had an easy run so far in the tournament, winning by walkover his match against the injured top seed Indra Wijaya, and managing two straight-game victories against teammate Koon On Chan, then Indonesia’s Ardiansyah in the quarter-finals.
In the bottom half of the draw, the number two seed Shon Seung Mo was stretched to the limit by Singaporean Ronald Susilo before reaching the final four. After the withdrawal of Wijaya before the start of the competition, Singapore’s hopes of a men’s singles title rested squarely on the shoulders of the young Susilo, and although he failed to reach the semis, he did not disappoint, taking the first two games before Shon woke up and turned the match around- final score 7/8, 0/7, 7/3, 8/6, 7/3.
Shon’s semi-final opponent will be World Junior runner-up Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia, who, in spite of being a last-minute substitute for teammate Johan Hadikusuma, has shown serious promise en route to the semis – he beat Hong Kong’s Kai Chuen Tam 7/0, 7/0, 0/7 8/6 to set up the meeting against Korea’s Shon.
The women’s singles semi-final line-up comprises a refreshing spread of nations – top seed Jun Jae Youn beat Thailand’s Salakjit Polsana to make it through, and will have to overcome Wai Chee Koon of the host nation is she’s to make it any further. Koon dashed one of two remaining Singaporean hopes of a title in this event, beating Li Li in four games 8/6, 7/1, 6/8, 7/5.
Second seed and SEA Games gold medallist Sujitra Ekmongkolpaisarn ended their second chance when she beat Fan Liu, also in four games 5/7, 8/6, 7/1, 7/2. Indonesia’s Dewi Tira will be her semi-final opponent after she thrashed Hwang Yu Mi of Korea 7/0, 7/1, 7/2.
The hosts are assured of a place in the men’s doubles final on Sunday, as Ng Wei and Agus Hariyanto are pitted against Kwun Yuen Yau and Albertus Susanto Njoto. Yay and Njoto ousted the second seeded Malaysian pair Jeremy Gan and Ng Kean Kok, although Malaysia still have a chance (albeit a slim one) in Chang Kim Wai and Hong Chieng Hun who will face the tournament’s top seeds Lee Dong Soo and Yoo Yong Sung, the Olympic silver medallists.
Thailand have two more chances of glory in the women’s doubles event when Duang Anong Arunkesorn and Kulchala Worawichitchaikul take on top seeds Fan Liu and Luxi Xiao, and Saralee Thugnthongkam and Sathinee Chankrachangwong play Malaysia’s Lim Pek Siah and Ang Li Peng in tomorrow’s semis, while Thungthongkam will be aiming for double honours, as she plays in the mixed event with Khunakorn Sudhisodhi.
The Thai pair face a strong Korean combination of Ha Tae Kwon and Hwang Yu Mi, while top seeds Kim Dong Moon and Ra Kyung Min face Kwok Wa Liu and Wai Chee Koon of Hong Kong.
