Seeds survive day two in Hong Kong
September 27, 2001 - Source : IBF
The seeds were in action for the first time at the Chinese Bank Hong Kongtoday, with most of them faring well in theirng matches.

Tournament favourite Indra Wijaya is still the only seeded casualty in the men's singles draw - the Singaporean top seed was forced to pull out of the event after sustaining an injury to his right thigh during his Chinasemi-final against Xia Xuanze last weekend.

Second seed Shon Seung Mo is now tipped for the win - the Korean breezed through his first round match against Hong Kong's Chun Yu Pang to set up a meeting with Japan's Shoji Sato.

SEA Games runner-up and the tournament's second favourite Boonsak Polsana also booked his place in the third round with a devastating 7/0, 7/0, 7/0 over Man Kit Fung to line up against Malaysia's Pei Wei Chung.

Saman Ismail, Lee Chong Wei and Ramesh Nathan also made it through with straight game wins.

The hosts still have three representatives in the men's singles draw, although two of them - Ng Wei and Koon On Chan play each other for a place in the quarter-finals. Fifth seed Tam Kai Chuen is the third remaining Hong Kong player

It’s a different story in the women''s singles event, though, with number three seed Wai Chee Koon the sole remaining local hope after ousting Malaysia's K Sugita in straight games 7/2, 7/4, 7/2. Top seed Jun Jae Youn looks confident of a semi-finals berth in this 1* event - the Korean has yet to be stretched in either of her matches so far, dropping just one point in her win over Ka Shun Ng in the first round, and beating Wing Mui Li of Hong Kong 7/0, 7/2, 7/1 to set up a quarter-finals bout with Salakjit Polsana of Thailand.

Polsana's second seeded teammate Sujitra Ekmongkolpaisarn has also enjoyed an easy run so far, and should make light work of Singapore's Fan Liu to book her place in the final four.

Olympic silver medallists Lee Dong Soo and Yoo Yong Sung got off to a confident start in their first match of the tournament. The top seeds beat Kennevic Asuncion and Naresh Ramnani 7/1, 7/5, 7/2, but the fourth seeded Shoji Sato and Sho Sasaki were not so fortunate with host pair Ng Wei and Ags Hariyanto pulling off their coup in four games 8/7, 6/8, 7/2, 7/3. Malaysia's seeded pairs, Jeremy Gan and Ng Kean Kok, and Chang Kim Wai and Hong Chien Hun also made it through to the quarter-finals.

In spite of Indra Wijaya's withdrawal, Singapore are still on course for at least one title, as their top seeded pair Zhan Liu and Luxi Xiao eased through to the quarters with a 7/0, 7/2, 7/2 win against Yang Fung and Tsz Mei Ko of Hong Kong, but must overcome another local hurdle in the form of Wai Chee Koon and Wan Ting Ling if they are to fulfil their dream.

Number two seeds Saralee Thungthongkam and Sathinee Chankrachangwong made it through to the last eight without stepping on court - their Singaporean opponents Fatimah Kumin Lim and Yanmei Jiang conceded a walkover to the Thai pair, who now face Malaysia's Fong Chew Yen and Joanna Quay.

Kim Dong Moon and Ra Kyung Min have also yet to lift their rackets in the mixed doubles competition - their first match will be against Donny Prasetyo and Jing Jing Fan of Singapore tomorrow. Second seeded pair Kwun Yuen Yau and Wan Ting Ling are safely through after their 7/3, 7/2, 7/0 win over Japan's Masahiro Yabe and Yukiko Kataito.
