Third title in sight for top seed Xia
September 22, 2001 - Source : IBF
Xia Xuanze continued his confident march towards a third consecutive title at the Youngor Super China Grand Prix yesterday, with a four-game victory over junior teammate Lin Dan.

Xia – Brunei World Grand Prix Finals champion and winner of the Asian Championships – got off to a flying start against youngster Lin, racing to a 7/0 win in the first game and securing the second 7/5. But Lin, showing strong signs of a glittering career ahead of him, managed to topple the world number one in the third game before bowing out to the top seeded Olympic bronze medallist Xia.

His semi-final bout will be against Singapore shuttler Indra Wijaya, who defeated Chinese qualifier Wu Yunyong to reach the last four of a major event for the second consecutive time.

Wijaya – brother of Olympic champion Candra – reached the semi-finals of the JVC Asian Championships last month in Manila.

Malaysia’s Wong Choong Hann is back on form after a year without honours, and enjoyed a comfortable 7/2, 7/1, 7/2 win over Hong Kong’s Ng Wei to book his place in the semis. But instead of meeting the second seed Chen Hong as expected, Wong’s opponent will be another Chinese qualifier - Guo Jianhua - who’s enjoyed a dream run at this 5* event, beating Malaysia’s Hazif Hashim, Agus Hariyanto of Hong Kong and now Chen.

Top seeds Candra Wijaya and Sigit Budiarto remain on track after a convincing straight games win over Denmark’s Jens Eriksen and Jesper Larsen 7/5, 7/1, 7/5, and will now face China’s Liu Yong and Chen Qiqiu for a final berth. Thailand’s Pramote Teerwiwatana and Tesana Panvisvas are unexpected faces in the semi-finals – world championship silver medallists Ha Tae Kwon and Kim Dong Moon of Korea, but not before a struggle.

It looked as though the Koreans were to have a easy win, racing ahead to a two-game lead – but an element of overconfidence set in, and coupled with the Thai resilience, Ha and Kim lost their grip on the game.

Teerawiwatana and Panvisvas will meet Zhang Jun and Zhang Wei in the second semi-final.

Zhang Jun, however, won’t be gunning for two titles this time, as his world championship winning form with Gao Ling in the mixed doubles seems to have stalled. The pair lost to Denmark’s Michael Sogaard and Rikke Olsen 4/7, 7/3, 7/5, 7/4 in a reversal of the Olympic semi-final almost one year to the day. China will be represented by Liu Yong and Chen Lin, who beat Brunei World Grand Prix Finals champions Jens Eriksen and Mette Schjoldager.

It’s an all-China cast in both the women’s disciplines – in the singles, top seed Zhou Mi will take on Asian Champion Zhang Ning, and Olympic champion Gong Zhichao is pitted against World Champion Gong Ruina.

Top seeds Gao Ling and Huang Sui will meet Zhang Jiewen and Wei Yili in a re-run of the Seville World Championships final, while second seeds Huang Nanyan and Yang Wei take on Zhang Yawen and Zhao Tingting.
