Although confirmation of Yap's withdrawal has yet to be received by IBF, it has been reported that he informed national coach Park Joo Bong of his decision to quit on Saturday, stating that he could not commit to the tough training schedule, especially in light of his recent calf injury.
BAM are said to be in discussions with the 30-year-old to try and change his mind. This is a particularly bitter pill for Yap's partner Cheah Soon Kit, who had desperately wanted to retire on a high note with a medal at the Sydney Games to follow up their silver medal glory in Atlanta. Despite this setback, Cheah is to compete in the Malaysianext week, with Ng Kean Kok.
If Yap does not go back on his decision then Cheah Soon Kit's Olympic dream is over, as IBF have ruled that he would not be permitted to compete with another partner in Sydney.
This then raises the question of who will be the lucky players to get a last minute call-up….
BAM have said they will look into Yap's reasons for retiring at their Executive Committee Meeting tomorrow and will decide whether to take any disciplinary action. This may have ruled out his chances of a coaching career with the Malaysian national squad. ;;Yap makes Olympic withdrawal U-turn;2;IBF; ; ;Atlanta silver medallist Yap Kim Hock is reported to have gone back on his decision to withdraw from the Sydney Olympics. ;Atlanta silver medallist Yap Kim Hock is reported to have gone back on his decision to withdraw from the Sydney Olympics.
BAM's coaching and training committee chairman, Datuk Zainal Dahalan denied that the 30-year-old was pressured into changing his mind, and said that both Yap and partner Cheah Soon Kit would resume training today.
Yap has been plagued with injuries of late, most recently in his right calf, and one of his reasons for quitting was the tough training regime. Zainal said that BAM were willing to draw up a more flexible training programme for the shuttler in order to allow him to recover from his injury.
He will not, however, play in the forthcoming Proton-Eon Malaysia Cheah will instead partner Ng Keon Kok.
Yap and Cheah are expected to bid farewell to international competition after the Sydney Games. |
